Il 9 Novembre 1991, il reattore a fusione nucleare JET ha generato una potenza superiore a 1,5 MW.Si tratta di una data storica in quanto per la prima volta nella storia si è ottenuta una quantità significativa di potenza da una reazione di fusione controllata.
Il JET è una macchina basata su un Tokamak a confinamento magnetico che opera con un combustibile misto deuterio/trizio al 50%.
Il JET è stato il primo apparato sperimentale a dimostrare che la fusione termonucleare controllata è possibile, anche se la sua applicazione commerciale e continuativa presenta grandi problemi tecnici.
